The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) is a card registration scheme introduced in 1995, for people working in the construction industry. In order to obtain the CSCS card operatives, supervisors or managers need to show competency in their work and display health and safety awareness by passing the CSCS Health & Safety Test.
The scheme currently covers over 350 occupations and is now being demanded as proof of competence by many organisations within industry, employers, clients and Government prior to awarding contracts or allowing people to work on site. This is now spreading to the Heritage sector in that English Heritage now expects craft people employed by contractors working on its estates or historic sites to hold the CSCS Heritage Skills Card. The intention being that this will become a requirement as soon as the number of cardholders reaches a viable level.
Competency within the heritage sector is shown in a number of ways:
Industry Accreditation: Practitioners supply evidence of their relevant work experience supported by an endorsement from an external referee and their employer confirming that they carry out this kind of work to a high standard. This route will be available until September 2010.
Approved Apprenticeship and Conservation Qualification: Demonstrating achievement of a recognised craft qualification and a recognised conservation qualification.
Heritage Skills NVQ: Achievement of the Heritage Skills NVQ Level 3.
In addition people requiring the CSCS Card will need to sit and pass the CSCS test appropriate to their level and sector.
Gates MacBain Associates provide guidance and assessment for NVQs and preparation for the CSCS test; we can also arrange for the Health & Safety Test on a day that is convenient to the candidate.
Training for the test is a one day course held at our premises in Lincoln, the course content being dependant on the individual requirements of the cohort.
